Residents of Oakbank were inspecting damage Tuesday after a tornado hit the area Monday night.

The tornado touched down near Oakbank around 9 p.m. and flattened crops and downed trees. No injuries were reported.

Helen Maddaford said the tornado arrived suddenly. One minute, everything was fine and in the next, golf-ball sized hail was pounding her home and then the tornado blew past.

"I was frightened...I was terrified," said Maddaford.

Shannon Johnson also saw the tornado.

"The wind was just blowing everything…you couldn't see anything," said Johnson.

Strong winds from the thunderstorm also ripped the roof off a barn and knocked down mailboxes.

On July 13, another tornado was sighted in Manitoba near Carman. Several others have been spotted this summer as well.

CTV Weather Specialist Jordan Witzel said the conditions to form tornados have been present on a regular basis this summer. Witzel said he's monitored more activity this year than compared with the previous six years.

The tornado on Monday didn't spend a lot of time on the ground.

Environment Canada issued a tornado warning about 10 minutes before the twister touched down near Oakbank. A tornado warning can only be issued if tornado activity has been spotted, said weather officials.

Severe thunderstorm watches and warnings were also in effect for most of southern Manitoba on Monday afternoon and evening.

The severe thunderstorm watches and warnings are also meant to advise people of the possibility that those storms are capable of causing tornadoes to form, said weather officials.
