Olympic gold medalist Jill Officer has left her mark on Winnipeg’s sporting community. Now, the champion curler will leave a mark on the city itself.

The City of Winnipeg has renamed the former River East Park after Officer, who played third on Jennifer Jones’ gold-medal winning curling team.

“It’s really incredible and so bizarre in some ways, but such an honour, and it’s just so great that it’s this park. I have so many memories of playing in this park when I was young,” she said.

North Kildonan city councillor Jeff Browaty, who chairs the Standing Policy Committee on Protection and Community Services, agreed to rename the park Jill Officer Park after the former North Kildonan resident. Officer grew up in the area and went to Chief Peguis Junior High and River East Collegiate, next to the park.
