An iconic Osborne Village restaurant will serve up its last pizza pie and pour its last beverage Sunday.

Papa George’s Restaurant at the corner of Osborne Street and River Avenue is closing.

The Greek restaurant famous for its pizza and late-night hours has been a literal cornerstone of the Osborne Village area for 37 years.

The owner of Papa George’s said he is retiring and the restaurant will close forever at 10 p.m. Sunday night.

Susan and Marcell Renard have visited the restaurant consistently for the last three decades.

“We had big parties in there. In fact, back in 2006, we had 46 people inside this window here,” said Marcell.

Now, he said, the pair will have to find a different place for their weekly visits.

David Wright works next door at Kustom Kulture and said he’s disappointed the business is closing.

“(It was) the best place to go after the bar for a quick bite to eat – open late. So it’s sad to see it go,” said Wright.

The closure comes on the heels of two other businesses disappearing from Osborne Village – Movie Village and Vi-Ann Restaurant.

Both shut down after the owner of the building at 43 Osborne agreed to sell it to an existing Shoppers Drug Mart location next door so that it could expand.

Despite strong community opposition to the expansion, both buildings have since been destroyed to make way for larger Shoppers Drug Mart location.

Movie Village now shares a much smaller space with Music Trader just down the street.

Wright is concerned the character of the village is slowly being chipped away.

“Osborne’s definitely undergoing some serious changes. Hopefully for the better, although I’m concerned about it,” said Wright.

Wright isn’t alone. Sean Hartford now works at the condensed Movie Village location inside Music Trader.

“(Papa George’s is) a stalwart in the community here. So I mean, we’ll see,” said Hartford.

So far there has been little information on what might replace Papa George’s Restaurant.

Wright said he has heard rumors of a Salisbury House location while Hartford has heard it could be a McDonalds or a 7/11.

Regardless of what replaces the Greek restaurant, Renard, Wright and Hartford all said it will be sorely missed.
