A sentencing hearing is set to begin today for a Manitoba man who admitted to killing his common-law partner and their two young children.

Fifty-two-year-old Trevis McLeod admitted in September to the slayings after a forensic assessment found he had not suffered from a mental disorder.

Thirty-two-year-old Shantelle Murphy, six-year-old Isabella and three-year-old Mason were found dead in the family's Portage la Prairie duplex in 2022.

The Crown and defence are jointly recommending that McLeod serve 16 years of his automatic life sentence before he is eligible for parole.
