A seven-year-old girl has died following a head-on crash on Academy Road Tuesday night in Winnipeg.

The girl and another young child were rushed to hospital in critical condition. Police confirmed late Wednesday afternoon that the seven-year-old child had died.

Police said an SUV was heading eastbound and a van was going westbound down Academy Road near Wilton Street when they crashed head-on around 11:15 p.m. Tuesday.

Five people were taken to hospital, including two adults and three children from the van, with two of the children in critical, including the girl who later died from injuries. The three others were listed in stable condition, said police.

The driver of the SUV was treated at the scene.

Police closed Academy from Guelph to Cambridge to investigate over night. The road was re-opened shortly after 7 a.m. Wednesday.

"No charges have been laid at this time," said police on Wednesday afternoon.
