After temperatures plunged early Tuesday morning down to the -30s for the first time this winter, a frigid arctic airmass is still locked on to southern Manitoba and northwestern Ontario tonight. Extreme cold warnings are in effect in both regions.
Expect mainly clear skies, light winds and temperatures plummetting overnight into the -30s with wind chill values that will feel as cold as the mid-minus 40s. Those conditions will continue well into Wednesday morning.
Frostbite can happen in minutes in those conditions.
The cold snap will break by Thursday as an arctic ridge of high pressure slides off to the east.
Thursday's high for Winnipeg is -13C which is very close to normal for this time of year. Temperatures will be even milder by Friday and through the weekend. Snow looks likely on Saturday.
