A possible midnight strike at Safeway stores has been averted. The United Food and Commercial Workers posted an online video on Saturday announcing they had reached tentative deal after months of negotiations.

The deal also has the support of the bargaining committee.

Last month, members voted 99.7 percent in favour of giving the negotiating committee a strike mandate. Union President Jeff Traeger said many people have been interested because of the recent purchase of Safeway stores by Sobeys and Federation Co-op.

Members are asked to attend a ratification vote on March 23.
