Western Canada’s largest outdoor volleyball tournament is back in Winnipeg this weekend, and organizers are already preparing for changes to its fundraising strategy in 2017.

Over the last 15 years, money raised from Super-Spike has supported the national women's volleyball team. Come 2017, the team will move from its home-base in Winnipeg to Richmond B.C., and Super-Spike will support other charities in the future.

Super-Spike general manager Greg Paseshnik said the tournament is sad to see the team go, but will continue the event in 2017.

“Super-Spike is not moving anywhere, and will make an impact for years to come,” Paseshnik told CTV Morning Live Friday morning.

Organizers are expecting about 8,000 people to descend on Maple Grove Rugby Park to play volleyball and take in musical performances Friday and Saturday night. This year, there are 470 teams, 44 volleyball courts, 900 chairs, and six tents at the non-profit event.

Since its inception, Super-Spike has raised $940,000 dollars. It hopes to break the $1 million mark in funds raised in 2016.

“It’s a huge chunk of money and we really need all the support, so this tournament has been huge for us, and it’s going to be really sad not being in Winnipeg anymore,” said Megan Cyr, who plays volleyball with Team Canada.

Cyr said the team has been in Winnipeg for almost 20 years, and it was time to switch up the location. She said Vancouver made the best offer, and several members of the team are based on the West Coast.

Moving forward, instead of supporting Team Canada, Super-Spike will support three different charities each year based on submissions.

Paseshnik said the Super-Spike office will be based out of Volleyball Manitoba, and an aspect of the event will continue to support volleyball.

In the meantime, organizers say participants should get ready for a great weekend of volleyball and music.

"We're expecting a sellout crowd again this year. That's close to 4,000 volleyball players alone. We're expecting close to another 4,000 for walk-up crowd, people just coming to watch the bands, husbands, wives, girlfriends, boyfriends. It’s a party," said Paseshnik.

Super-Spike doors open Friday at 5 p.m.. The first game gets underway at 6:30 p.m.. The JD Edwards Band headlines Friday. The Sheepdogs headline Saturday night.
