Officers have arrested a man after an 88-year-old woman was beaten and robbed in a break-in on the weekend.

Police were called to the 1000 block of Henderson Highway on Jan. 21.

A male suspect forced his way into a residence, hitting an 88-year-old victim and then fleeing with cash, said police.

The victim was taken to hospital with serious upper body injuries and was later upgraded to stable.

Police said the same suspect is believed responsible for a strong-arm robbery on Jan. 11 near Edmonton Street and Webb Place in which a purse was taken from a 65-year-old woman. The victim was not injured.

Police said Daniel Andrew Campbell, 22, of no fixed address faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault, robbery with violence and breach of probation.

On Wednesday, the family of the victim attacked on Henderson Highway released a statement.

"The family of Lena Stetwick would like to thank everyone for their prayers and concern over our Mother's recovery from the terrible assault and injuries she incurred. At this time we want to especially thank the residents of her apartment block who first came to her aid and called 911. The ongoing love and support they showed her has helped ease her pain. Secondly, many, many thanks to the Winnipeg Police Dept members who have reached out to us with such caring and compassion and their constant updating us on the case. We would also like to say a huge thank you to all the staff at Health Sciences Centre, the doctors, nurses aids and support staff that have shown such wonderful and gentle care for our Mom, both emotionally and physically," said relatives in the statement.

"At this time her recovery is day by day and it is still too soon to tell how long it will be. Our hope is that this would never again happen to anyone, however unrealistic that hope is. Please, all seniors out there take all the best steps you can to keep yourself safe. Lena herself wants to thank everyone for their prayers and best wishes. We hope everyone understands our need for privacy at this time as our energy and focus is on helping our Mother recover," said relatives in the statement.
