RCMP are investigating the death of a 16-year-old male after an accidental shooting at the Lakeside Hutterite Colony in the RM of Cartier.
Police were called to the colony around 3:30 p.m. on Sunday after receiving reports that a youth had been shot.
Sam Hofer from Lakeside Hutterite Colony said that two teens had taken a rifle into the bush to do some target shooting. When the accident happened, a 14-year-old boy had the rifle.
“He was aiming with the scope, you have one eye closed, and as he pulled the trigger. The 16-year-old went in front of the gun, and the bullet hit him,” Hofer said.
The teen was pronounced dead at the scene.
The community is mourning the loss of the teen identified as Brendan Hofer. Sam Hofer remembers him as a happy, hard-working person, who wanted to help everyone.
No charges have been laid at this time.
The investigation is ongoing.
