Officers said a 14-year-old boy was shot in a canoe while returning from duck hunting.

Members of the RCMP Thompson rural detachment were called shortly after 7 p.m. to PR 280, about 30 kilometres from Split Lake Cree Nation (Tataskweyak Cree Nation).

A 14-year-old male was shot while in a canoe with a 23-year-old man, said RCMP.

Early reports suggested the two were coming back from duck hunting when a gun discharged, hitting the youth, said RCMP. The canoe also capsized.

The teen and man were able to make it to shore and then used an ATV to get out of the bush area. Two paramedics happened to be in the area and took the teen to a local nursing station. He was later transported to Winnipeg for treatment and is listed in stable condition, said RCMP.

Officers continue to investigate the incident.
