Ottawa says it will commit it's share of the cost for Shoal Lake's Freedom Road.

All three levels of government reaffirmed their commitment to the $30 million project at a ceremony at the Manitoba Legislature. The Chief and residents of Shoal Lake 40 were on hand for the event.

Design work is already underway and is expected to be complete by 2016.

The road would run from the community to the TransCanada Highway near the Ontario border.

The First Nation was isolated from the mainland when a channel was cut to provide Winnipeg with its drinking water.

Shoal Lake 40 is also under a permanent boil water advisory.
