A treacherous night for travel in the Red River Valley Friday.

Environment Canada issued a Blowing Snow Advisory for areas including Winnipeg, Morden, Winkler, Portage la Prairie, Selkirk and Steinbach.

It said south winds at 50 gusting to 70 kilometres an hour were creating widespread poor visibilities through much of the region and travel was expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility.

Forecasters predicted conditions to begin to improve after midnight as winds slowly diminish.

Witnesses described road conditions as terrible on Winnipeg’s Perimeter Highway around 7 p.m., when a three-vehicle crash closed the northbound lanes between McGillivray Boulevard and Wilkes Avenue.

RCMP kept the road closed for about an hour as tow trucks cleared the vehicles. Police have yet to say if anyone was hurt.

CTV received reports of vehicles in the ditch along other highways in the region.
