Volunteers with Dalnavert Museum are angry the doors to one of the city most beautiful and historic homes has shut down.

The museum at 61 Carlton St. closed shortly before Labour Day. News that volunteer services were ending came very suddenly, said former volunteer Theresa French.

"We were asked not to come back to shifts,” she said. “It was unceremoniously told to us that we were no longer needed here."

The man who lived here was the son of former Prime Minister John A. Macdonald. He was also premier of Manitoba for a brief time.

The home is a typical re-creation of a Victorian gentleman's home. It was built in 1879 and for its centennial it received half a million dollars-worth of renovations.

Volunteers are hoping someone will swoop in with funds to keep the museum open in some capacity, said French.

The Manitoba Historical Society is going through a review process due to a declining number of visitors at the museum. They say volunteers are not all members of the historical society, but their opinions will be considered.

No final decision has been made and the society is looking at options.
