A weekend art show in Winnipeg is showing off the elegant and meticulous side of wood carving.

Gary Foidart is a self-taught Manitoba based wood carving artist, with a new art show inside the Edge Gallery at 611 Main St.

Foidart said he made a lot of art mistakes over the past 20 years, and he’s seen his fair share of art pieces break, but he never gave up creating.

“(It’s) just one of those things. (I) started carving a knife handle, (I) started making a few knifes and a little furniture and then it branched out into carving as art,” said Foidart, “I just love the way they come out.”

All of the pieces are made from burl wood, which comes from his property in Roseilse, Manitoba.

Foidart said no two pieces of burl wood are the same.

Before carving a piece of wood, he finds a piece of burl in the ground.

It takes two days for burl wood to dry out.

The art show continues runs Saturday March 5 and Sunday March 6 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
