For many people the holiday season brings time with family, a break from work and a festive feast, but it’s also a time when much of the city closes down.

Here’s what’s open and closed in Winnipeg on New Year’s Eve and Day:

Winnipeg garbage and recycling

The Brady, Panet and Pacific 4R Winnipeg Depots are closed Jan. 1.

The Brady Road Resource Management Facility for commercial customers is closed New Year’s Day.

Garbage and recycling won’t be collected on New Year’s Day. The city asks that between Dec. 25 to Dec. 28 and Jan. 1 to Jan. 4, residents put their carts out one day later than normally scheduled (i.e. if Dec. 28 is your collection, it is moved to Dec. 29).

Winnipeg Transit

Winnipeg Transit operates on a Sunday schedule on Jan. 1.

Buses are free on New Year’s Eve beginning at 7 p.m. until service ends.

Beginning on Dec. 16 the Winnipeg Transit winter schedule is in effect for the following routes: 28 Brookside Express, 31 Keewatin Express, 36 Northwest Super Express, 40 All Seasons Express, 44 Grey, 45 Talbot, 46 Transcona Express, 72, 74 Kenaston, 75 Crosstown East, 76, 78 Waverley and 96.

City libraries, recreation facilities and pools

All Winnipeg Public Library branches are open until 5 p.m. on Dec. 31 and are closed Jan. 1. 

On Dec. 31: The St. James Civic Centre, Freight House, Peguis Trails Health & Fitness Centre and Sergeant Tommy Prince Place are open until 4 p.m.; The Fort Rouge Leisure Centre is open until 4:30 p.m.; Magnus Eliason Recreation Centre and Mayfair Recreation Centre are open regular hours; and St. John's Leisure Centre is closed.

All leisure centres are closed  Jan. 1. 

All City of Winnipeg indoor pools are closed Jan. 1. On Dec. 31, all pools that are scheduled to be open close at 4:30 p.m.

Other City of Winnipeg services

The City of Winnipeg recognizes Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day as Statutory Holidays. All civic offices are closed all day Jan. 1.

The Animal Services Agency is closed on Jan. 1.

The Brookside, St. Vital and Transcona cemeteries are open every day over the holidays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The Winnipeg Parking Authority is closed on Jan. 1. 

Liquor Marts

On Dec. 31, all Winnipeg Liquor Marts are open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., except Gateway (Express), Pembina Village (Express), Reenders (Express) and St. Anne's (Express) which close at 6 p.m. The Jefferson (Express) location is closed.

All Brandon Liquor Marts are open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Dec. 31.

On Dec. 31, all rural Liquor Marts are open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., except Steinbach which is open until 7 p.m.

All Winnipeg, Brandon and rural Liquor Marts are closed Jan. 1.

Malls

CF Polo Park is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on New Year's Eve and is closed New Year’s Day.

Garden City Shopping Centre is open 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on New Year's Eve and is closed New Year’s Day.

Kildonan Place is open 10 a.m. tp 5 p.m. on New Year's Eve and is closed New Year’s Day.

St. Vital Centre is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on New Year's Eve and is closed New Year’s Day.

Grant Park Shopping Centre is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on New Year's Eve and is closed New Year’s Day.

Outlet Collection Winnipeg is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on New Year's Eve and is closed New Year’s Day.

Attractions and Events

The Manitoba Museum is open every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. between Dec. 22 and Jan. 6, except Dec. 24 and 25.
