A Winkler woman who was the oldest Canadian has died, just days before her 112th birthday.

Elizabeth Buhler, 111, became the oldest living Canadian last spring.

She moved to Canada in 1925 from Russia and raised her children in Manitoba, said family.

"She was a very giving person," said Lena Pranke, Buhler's daughter.

Family said Buhler credited exercise and good genes with her longevity.

Buhler died on Sunday.

A funeral is scheduled to be held in Winkler on Saturday.
