Kosovo's recent declaration of independence sparked protests Saturday on the grounds of the Manitoba legislature. Members of the Serbian community in Winnipeg, and across Canada, rallied against Kosovo's independence.

The protesters are urging the Canadian government not recognize Kosovo as an independent state. They say their independence is illegal, and could spur separation talks between Qubec and Canada.

"If our government here in Canada recognizes a separate Kosovo it may weaken its political position in battling separation," Prof. Bob Travica, of the Asper School of Business, told CTV News.

Similar rallies took place in Ottawa and Toronto Saturday. Kosovo made its declaration about two weeks ago. Since then, recognizing the declaration has ignited controversy around the world.
