A Winnipeg teacher and student have been recognized for their contributions to Canadian history.

Matt Henderson from St. John's Ravenscourt was awarded the Governor General's History Award for excellence in teaching.

He was given the award at a special ceremony in Ottawa Tuesday.

As part of his Grade 11 history class, Henderson explored how historical events helped shape the Idle No More Movement and published a book for short fiction.

As part of his acceptance speech, Henderson gave credit to his students.

"They created the book and they did all the work. I just happened to be there, so I feel a little foolish here today," said Henderson.

Meanwhile Holy Ghost student Kelsey Omaga was awared the Kayak Illustrated History Award for her story 'The Chinese Labourers.'

It details the living conditions of the Chinese railway workers in the 1880's as they built the Canadian Pacific Railway.

Omaga received a special certificate and a $1,000 RESP.
