1 woman dead after seven-vehicle pileup

A blizzard that hit southern Manitoba caused massive pileups as furious winds severely reduced visibility. Danton Unger reports.

A woman is dead after she was hit by a vehicle in a seven-car pileup on the outskirts of Winnipeg Friday.

According to RCMP, emergency crews were called to the major crash near Fermor and Symington roads around 9:45 a.m.

Crews from Springfield Fire & Rescue, along with the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service as well as Emergency Medical Services were on scene treating those injured.

A 30-year-old Winnipeg woman died at the scene. Mounties said she was hit by a car while exiting her own.

There weren’t any other serious injuries reported, RCMP said.

Oakbank RCMP, along with a forensic collision reconstructionist, are investigating.

On Friday, the province issued an emergency alert warning drivers to stay off southern Manitoba highways amid a blizzard that caused numerous highway closures and countless collisions.

The blizzard, care of an Alberta Clipper low-pressure system, touched down earlier that day in parts of Manitoba, bringing with it 90 km/h northerly winds and blowing snow, triggering a cascade of weather advisories from Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), which ended in the afternoon.
