Vacant house slated for emergency demolition after second fire in less than a year

Watch as Winnipeg firefighters extinguish the remaining hotspots after a fire completely destroyed a vacant house.

A vacant house in Winnipeg’s North Point Douglas neighbourhood will be torn down after a major fire Sunday morning.

Crews were called to the 200 block of Austin Street North just before 6:30 a.m. When they arrived, firefighters said they saw smoke billowing from the house and launched an attack from outside as it wasn’t safe to enter the building.

No one was injured, though the building sustained significant smoke, water and fire damage.

The house was previously damaged from another fire in March.

The city said crews will remain on scene throughout the day Sunday to ensure all hot spots are extinguished and the roads are de-iced from the fire fight.

Nearby roadways and streets will be blocked off as crews complete the demolition.
