A 19-year-old woman died after a vehicle went off the Disraeli Bridge and crashed into the riverbank below on Wednesday afternoon.

The woman was taken to hospital in unstable condition, but succumbed to injuries, said police late Wednesday night.

The crash was reported around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday near Henderson Highway in Winnipeg.

Thursday afternoon, police said an investigation had determined the SUV had been heading southbound over the bridge when it lost control, hit another vehicle and then went through a protective guard rail, falling about 45 feet (13.7 m) to the riverbank below.

Police shut down the area to traffic while emergency crews responded.

On Tuesday, Winnipeg police issued a notice about road conditions and advised drivers to be cautious on bridges, overpasses and other icy road sections. Multiple other crashes were reported in and around Winnipeg in recent days.
