The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority is putting the emergency room at Seven Oaks General Hospital and other city ER's under the microscope.

In October, 57-year-old Mohinder Singh died from a brain aneurysm after suffering on the waiting room floor at Seven Oaks for two hours.

Unable to sit up from the pain in her head, she chose to lay down. Her husband made repeated attempts to get her help from staff to no avail.

In response, the health authority is reviewing practices and procedures and saying sorry.

"I wanted to apologize to Mr. Singh and the Singh family. Mrs. Singh did not get the level of care that she should have within our system," WRHA CEO Milton Sussman said.

Sussman explained when Singh arrived at Seven Oaks, she was not properly assessed. He said they're taking the matter seriously and taking steps to improve patient safety.

Those steps include an emergency leadership group. It’s in place at Seven Oaks’ ER department for the next six weeks following patients from arrival to discharge.

In addition, an ER department review team is being created to assess operations in all hospitals. They will make planned and unannounced visits. It will release quarterly reports starting next month.

Also, a patient advisory council made up of members from the public will be established.

A review of the critical incident process will be done because it took months for the Singh family to get answers.

"Our expectations were so low the way that we were treated, we're actually pleased with the apology," said Singh's son Braham

Braham Singh said his family accepts the apology, but on top of improvements to care, he wants people involved in his mother’s care disciplined.

"They turned my dad away repeatedly and left my mom to die on the floor of the emergency room floor. People need to be held accountable for this," Singh said.
