Colleen Bready's forecast: Another hit of wintry weather is expected in Manitoba

Share

Get ready for another wintry blast of snow and bitter cold in southern Manitoba.

A ridge of arctic high pressure is spreading southward, bringing sunshine back to much of the province on Wednesday.

However, it also comes with a blast of arctic air. Daytime highs will remain in the upper minus teens or -20s across the province this afternoon.

An extreme cold warning issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) this morning for parts of the southwest is no longer in effect.

For all intents and purposes, though, that means conditions have moderated just enough to end the warning. It will still be a cold day with the risk of frostbite across Manitoba.

Meanwhile, an Alberta clipper is racing across the southern prairies this afternoon.

ECCC has issued a snowfall warning for southwest regions including Virden, Melita, and Killarney.

The weather agency said snow will arrive late this afternoon and taper off on Thursday morning. The heaviest snow will fall tonight. Ten to 15 cm of snowfall is expected.

Snow will reach Winnipeg overnight, but far less is expected. Just 2 cm is forecast for the city. At this point, it looks like it will have moved on during the morning commute.

Colder air will linger once the clipper moves off, so be prepared for a colder day on Friday before temperatures begin to moderate on the weekend as warmer air settles over the region.

ECCC said the warming trend should persist through Christmas.
