Colleen Bready's Forecast: The deep freeze is coming
Another day, another round of snow is falling in southern Manitoba on Tuesday—all before the first sustained deep freeze of the season sets in tonight.
After Winnipeg received as much as 20 cm of snowfall in parts of the city on Sunday and Monday, up to 5 cm of snow could fall today.
Forecast snowfall amounts are similar for the rest of the Red River Valley. Lesser amounts, closer to 2 cm, are expected in the southwest and in northwestern Ontario.
Strong north winds will cause blowing snow this afternoon in Brandon and the southwest and this evening in Winnipeg, the Red River Valley, and southern Interlake.
Those strong northerly winds will also deliver an Arctic blast of bitterly cold air to southern Manitoba tonight.
Overnight lows will drop into the mid-minus 20s in Winnipeg and southeast. Even colder temperatures are expected in Brandon and the southwest with lows plummeting into the low -30s.
Environment and Climate Change Canada expects extreme cold warnings will likely be issued for tonight for some areas.
Then we will need to brace for a very cold couple of days and nights ahead on Wednesday and Thursday across the south.
The tradeoff is that the sun will be shining under Arctic high pressure.
As the north winds cross northern regions this afternoon, temperatures will fall there first this afternoon.
Many communities in the north will see a mix of sun and cloud this afternoon. Pockets of snow will fall around Norway House, Churchill, and Gillam.
Temperatures will moderate in the south on Friday before climbing above normal by the weekend.
