Colleen Bready's forecast: Warm temperatures arrive in Manitoba, but not for long

Relief is here – it is much warmer on Wednesday in Manitoba.

A warm front leading a low pressure system over the Northwest Territories is moving milder air into Manitoba today and on Thursday.

As much as that’s bringing a warm-up to the south, the northwest is the warmest part of the province this afternoon. The Pas and Flin Flon are forecast to reach a very mild January high of -1 C, while Lynn Lake and Brochet are expected to climb to -3 C.

Southern regions won’t see temperatures climb quite as high, but very close - most areas will see highs in the minus single digits.

However, the warm air won’t quite reach areas closer to the eastern border and in northwestern Ontario just yet.

The low pressure system will also spread snow and flurries across north-central and northeastern regions today. Environment and Climate Change Canada forecasts four to eight cm of snow in some areas.

For southern areas, a few flurries are possible with the risk of freezing rain.

Temperatures tonight will rise as the warmer air mass continues to flood into Manitoba.

By Thursday, forecast highs in the south will come close to the freezing mark. Winnipeg’s forecast high tomorrow is -2 C, while Brandon will remain steady throughout the day around -3 C.

There is a catch - strong and gusting northwest winds on the backside of the low pressure system as it moves out.

These balmy conditions won’t last long – colder air and sunshine return on Friday to Manitoba.
