Western parts of the province are under a freezing rain warning Sunday.

Areas as far north as Red Deer Lake to as far south as Glenlochar, Man., near the Saskatchewan border, are under the advisory, issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) earlier this morning.

There are also freezing rain warnings in Dauphin and Winnipegosis, where some highways were closed due to icy conditions.

ECCC credits the freezing rain to a pocket of warm air combined with rain and snowfall and sub-zero surface temperatures. It said it’s expected to gradually taper off by early Sunday afternoon.

Meantime, a freezing drizzle advisory is in effect for parts of northwestern Ontario near the Manitoba border. ECCC said pockets of the precipitation are expected to persist through Sunday evening and will turn into snow overnight.

Travellers are asked to use caution when driving on roads or highways and refer to ECCC for the latest updates.
