A double shooting has claimed the life of a 20-year-old man and also injured a woman on Langside Street on Tuesday. Officers are investigating whether the attack was a random incident.

Winnipeg police and emergency crews were called to the 500 block of Langside shortly after 4 p.m. on April 2.

A man and a woman were both found with gunshot wounds and were transported to hospital in critical condition.

The man later died from injuries. He has been identified as Nigel Dixon, 20, of Winnipeg, said police.

The woman was later upgraded to stable.

Police said Wednesday the victims do not have criminal records and have no apparent links to gangs.

Some residents said things have improved in the West End, prior to the recent violent incident.

“There (are) a lot of issues in this area that have gotten somewhat better in the past, but this is not uncommon to see in the West End,” said Shawn Finn.

A woman and her daughter also spoke to CTV News. The woman didn’t want her name used, but said she’s concerned by the gunfire.

“There’s a community centre around here. We’re always walking back and forth. It’s pretty scary,” she said.

Another resident, Camila Gamboa, said she’s been frightened in her neighbourhood before, but never like this.

“There’s shootings and stuff like that and I don’t want it to get worse and I don’t want to be in the middle of that one day,” said Gamboa.

Police continue to investigate.

Anyone with information regarding the incident on Langside is asked to call investigators at 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-8477.
