Over 107K rounds of golf in 2024 at city-run courses, continued success projected in 2025
Golf continues to surge in Winnipeg, according to new numbers from the city.
A new report on the agenda for the property and development committee shows more than 107,000 rounds of golf were played in 2024 during the 192 days of operation at city-run courses.
"It's been a number of years consecutively now where golf has been in a fairly healthy position," said Ben Fey, the general manager of Golf Services for the city.
Between 2010 and 2019, city-run courses averaged 79,825 rounds played. That number has now jumped 29 per cent with an average of 103,225 rounds played between 2020 and 2024.
"The pandemic certainly provided a jolt to the golf industry," said Fey. "So, there was a real boom over those two years, and there have been significant tailwinds experienced in the couple of seasons we've had since then. So, 2024 is certainly no different."
He said the perception of golf has changed over the last number of years, noting it is now considered a cool sport that is good for both physical and mental wellness.
That perception mixed with recent high numbers is leading to projections of continued success for 2025 and beyond.
"Assuming normal weather and things continuing the way that they have recently, with participation levels staying where they've been, the city-run golf courses, we expect those to be in a profitable situation for the city for the next number of years to come."
Rates will be going up slightly next season, with Fey saying the price per round will increase by $1.
For those who are looking to start the sport for the first time or continue what they have started, Fey encourages everyone to come to a city-run course in 2025.
"The city-run golf courses are affordable and accessible. We welcome golfers of all skill levels. There's club rental available, and you don’t need to be a seasoned scratch golfer to play at our courses. It's a great spot to come out and learn the game, spend some time with family members and friends in an outdoor setting, and we welcome all those who want to give golf a go."
