Security guard beaten, assaulted with name tag near skywalk: Winnipeg police

A Winnipeg man is in custody after he allegedly assaulted a security guard in downtown Winnipeg on Sunday.
According to police, officers responded to the assault in the 300 block of York Avenue at 7:50 a.m.
A 51-year-old security guard was found suffering from injuries. He was treated by paramedics and released.
Investigators allege a 20-year-old man tried to enter the Skywalk at Carlton Street but was denied by security guards because he was acting agitated and it was believed he was intoxicated. Police said security asked him to leave after he became aggressive.
“The victim attempted to assist his co-workers in de-escalating the suspect, at which time he was physically assaulted by the suspect, causing him to fall to the ground,” police said in a news release. “His glasses were ripped off his face and stomped on, and his name tag (was) torn off. The pin from the name tag was then used in an attempt to stab the victim.”
Police arrested the suspect in the area without incident.
The 20-year-old man has been charged with assault causing bodily harm, assault with a weapon and mischief under $5,000. He was detained in custody.
