A Winnipeg taxi driver sustained minor injuries after his vehicle was carjacked and he was dragged to the ground on Tuesday.

The Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) began to investigate just after 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday when they received a report of a robbery in the 800 block of Allegheny Drive.

Police determined that the 53-year-old taxi driver was helping his customer carry groceries when an intoxicated teenager got into the driver’s seat of his taxi.

According to the WPS, the driver confronted the female, but she put the car in reverse and began to drive away. Police note the taxi driver got caught in the open door of the vehicle and was dragged on the ground. He was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and has since been released.

Officers found the taxi in the first 100 block of Killarney Avenue with the suspect still inside. The 16-year-old female was taken into custody and charged with robbery, operating a conveyance while impaired by alcohol or drugs or both, failing to comply with a breath demand, and driving without a licence or with an invalid licence.

The suspect was released on an undertaking. The charges have not been proven in court.
