Winnipeg Harvest is putting out an urgent call for food in its efforts to help Syrian refugees.

Many newcomers arrive In Manitoba with little income and have to rely on food banks. Harvest says it's running short on nutritional items for Winnipeg's newest families from Syria, as well as its regular clients.

"We're here to serve people in need and with the recent influx, there is an increase in demand no question," said Winnipeg Harvest spokesperson. Chris Albi.

It’s asking people for specific donations immediately:

- Canned beans (including chick peas and lentils)

- Canned soup

- Canned fruit and vegetables

- Rice

Winnipeg Harvest says cash donations are also accepted. It says for every $1 donated, $20-worth of food is distributed to those in need.
