Another group is encouraging the Hanover School Division to change a policy that prohibits teachers from talking about same-sex families and LGBTTQ issues in elementary school classrooms.
The Manitoba Teacher's Society said it’s not an easy change but one that is necessary.
"Whether you are in Steinbach or Thompson, Swan River or Flin Flon - every child should be in a school that is inclusive, accepting and understanding of our differences," said Norm Gould, Manotiba Teacher’s Society president.
The suggestion came with a quiet response from trustees, who say they stick by their current policies.
Mika Schellenberg, an openly gay grade-12 student grew up in the Hanover School Division, and would like to see change too.
"I would have liked to learn that it existed, that it was okay,” said Schellenberg.
She said a lot of what she was taught in school was religion based and portrayed same-sex relationships to be wrong.
Trustees did not discuss the issue any further after Gould’s message during the public meeting Wednesday night.
