The province issued a wind warning starting on Oct. 3 and continuing over several days for sections of Lake Winnipeg and Lake Manitoba.

Winds are expected to increase up to 85 km/h Friday morning, and could remain between 55 km/h to 75 km/h throughout the weekend until Tuesday, Oct. 7, diminishing late that day.

A high-to-severe warning is in effect for the south basin of Lake Winnipeg and a moderate-to-severe warning is in effect for the south basin of Lake Manitoba.

“Wind speed and direction could raise levels by as much as five feet or greater along the south shore of Lake Winnipeg and on the south shore of Lake Manitoba. In addition, these winds can result in significant wave action on shorelines,” said the province.

Property owners in the areas affected are urged to take precautions.

Environment Canada also issued a special weather statement late Thursday for Winnipeg, calling for a “major change in the weather pattern moving in tonight.”

Colder temperatures with rain and drizzle are expected.

“The rain may even mix with some wet snow over higher elevations of the Western Red River Valley Friday,” said Environment Canada.

“As the main precipitation shield from this system pulls away Friday, narrow bands of lake effect showers will develop over and to the south-southeast of the Manitoba lakes,” said Environment Canada.

Environment Canada's special weather statement for Winnipeg was lifted Friday.
