More than 150 people had to leave their homes in the Roseau River First Nation Saturday as the Red River crest closed in on Manitoba.

Families with small children, elders, and people with health conditions make up the first wave of evacuees fleeing flood waters in Roseau River. The remaining 700 residents have been told to pack their bags and prepare to leave over the next 2 days.

Meanwhile, flood forecasters say they will adjust the forecast peak for the Red River after favorable conditions in the Red River Valley. The crest is expected to arrive in Emerson as early as Monday and in Winnipeg sometime between May 2nd and 5th.

In western Manitoba, the province says water levels on the Souris River at Melita will remain near crest for the next few days and the river will crest at Souris sometime between April 24th and 29th.

The province says 958 Manitobans have evacuated their communities on a precautionary basis, mostly because of limited road access, including the Peguis First Nation and the Rural Municipalities of Montcalm, Morris and Ritchot.
