Winnipeg police said a garage fire that caused more than $70,000 in damage may have been deliberately set.

Police said it happened early Monday morning in a back lane between Martin Avenue West and Union Avenue West in the Elmwood area.

Neighbours noticed the garage on fire around 2:15 a.m.

Fire crews were able to put out the flames.

Police said a mattress that was up against the garage may have been set on fire.

A vehicle inside the garage and a neighbouring garage were also damaged during the blaze, and nearby garbage and recycling bins melted from the heat.

The investigation into the fire is ongoing.
