Brandon University says work is getting underway on a sexual violence, assault and harassment advisory committee.

This is one of nine objectives that come out of a task force, established after a reported sexual assault in September 2015.

The task force was established to focus the university’s first priority response on the care and support of the survivor.

An advisory committee will use the task force recommendations in the creation of its policy and protocol, currently under development.

It will create an appropriate new standalone policy and protocol that will be ready for consultation with the campus community and external partners in Sept. 2016.

The committee is made up of students, faculty, staff and community experts.

Brandon University said it's already following one of the recommendations outlined by the task force.

An online release read, “Brandon University used a Student Behavioural Contract, which we now recognize to be inappropriate in this case. We are reviewing the use of Student Behavioural Contracts under any circumstance and will no longer be using them in the case of sexual assault, sexual violence or sexual harassment.”

The university said it doesn’t want students to feel silenced.

“We realize that we have much work in front of us as an institution and a society to further encourage reporting, to support survivors, and to reduce all incidences of sexual violence, assault and harassment,” said an online statement.
