Six-time Olympic medallist Cindy Klassen of Winnipeg will take one year off long-track speed skating, and decide next season whether she wants continue with the sport.

In a statement, the 33-year-old Klassen said she will focus on her studies at the University of Calgary.

“I think taking a step away from skating and focusing on something completely different will help me to determine whether I am ready to hang up the blades for good and pursue something new or get back into skating once again. This time off will also give my body a chance to recover from so many years of hard training and hopefully heal some of the minor lingering injuries.”

Klassen is the only Canadian to have won five medals at one Olympic games, which she accomplished in 2006 when she hauled in one gold, two silver and two bronze.

The Winnipegger has held a world record in the women’s 1500m since 2005, and the 3000m since 2006.
