Classes have been cancelled Friday for students at Kildonan-East Collegiate after a fire.
The blaze forced out staff and students at Kildonan-East Collegiate on Concordia Avenue Thursday morning in Winnipeg. Police said they believe the fire was deliberately set.
No injuries were reported.
Officers said damage is pegged at $500,000 and the arson unit is investigating.
The fire was located in the boys' washroom on the second floor around 9:15 a.m.
The school evacuation saw staff and students go to a field behind the school.
"The cause of the fire is under investigation. As a result of the fire, there was extensive smoke damage on the second floor," said the River East Transcona School Division. "Due to the clean-up required, classes are cancelled today and Friday. It’s hoped classes will resume on Monday but parents and students are asked to check the school or division website to confirm this.”
The school division's website can be found here.
Police ask anyone with information regarding the fire to contact investigators at 204-986-6813 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-8477.
