CTV News has obtained a copy of the last engineering report done on the Arlington Street Bridge. Overall, the structure is considered in poor condition, which has one city councillor saying it’s time for a new bridge.

CTV News has obtained the last engineering report on the bridge, dated in 2011. The conditions on the bridge are ranked on a scale out of 10.

The report shows all sections fall somewhere between three and six, with six being satisfactory, five being adequate, four representing deteriorating and three being poor.

The report says portions of the overpass “have moderate to heavy corrosion throughout” and in some areas the “concrete is deteriorating and should be re-faced.”

Coun. Mike Pagtakhan (Point Douglas) said the numbers in the report are a concern and he wants a new bridge built sooner, rather than later.

“It's some cause for concern for public safety in my opinion,” he said.

He said he wants a new bridge built for public safety, and also to save money in the long run.

“The order of dollars in terms of getting this bridge, some of the maintenance is $100,000 every time they do maintenance,” said Pagtakhan.

The city said that while the bridge is in poor condition, it is functioning safely.

The city said if it wasn’t considered safe, it would be closed.

A city spokesperson said a report on the bridge’s future is expected soon at city hall. The city also said it inspects older structures like the Arlington Street Bridge on a regular basis.
