A Winnipeg driver escaped injury when a traffic light fell on top of a car Wednesday afternoon. A security camera caught the incident on video.
A car pulled up at the intersection of Watt Street and Chalmers Avenue around 4:30 p.m. on April 9. In the video, the traffic light began swaying and then fell over, hitting the vehicle.
Winnipeg police say the driver wasn't injured. Eventually police freed the vehicle, and the person drove away. The traffic light was replaced within hours.
Peter Harzan caught the incident on a surveillance camera outside his workplace. He calls it a commentary on the state of infrastructure in the city.
“I think anybody who drives a lot in the city experiences the pot holes, the missed curbs, no lines on the roads. It’s pretty rough out there,” Harzan says.
The city's manager of transportation said this was an isolated incident and he isn't aware of this happening before. He said city traffic signals are safe.
Traffic signals engineers are looking into this case to determine the cause.
