A robbery at a North End grocery store sent an employee to hospital in critical condition Thursday morning.

It happened shortly before 9:30 a.m. near the corner of Selkirk Avenue and Salter Street.

Police said a man entered the store armed with a knife; he demanded and received an undisclosed amount of cash and cigarettes.

A store employee was stabbed in the upper body during the confrontation. He was taken to hospital in critical condition, but has since been upgraded to stable.

Another employee also sustained minor injuries.

An 18-year-old man was being held for police when officers arrived on scene, and was taken into custody.

He faces multiple robbery, assault and weapon charges.
