Manitoba is marking a major milestone for women in the province.
In front of a large crowd Friday, Family Services Minister Kerri Irvin-Ross proclaimed January, “Women's Equality Month.”
It's in honour of the 100th anniversary of women receiving the right to vote in Manitoba.
In 1916, some women in the province became eligible to vote and hold office in provincial and federal elections.
The right to vote in federal elections was granted in 1918, thanks to trailblazers like Nellie McClung.
“I wonder if she looked down today, (she’d see) what she created and what she had pioneered. The opportunities she has encouraged for all of us,” said Irvin-Ross.
A number of special events are planned to mark the voting milestone, including a display in the legislature, a Festival du Voyageur ice sculpture and a centennial gala.
