Forget the selfie. There's a new social media trend lighting up the Internet and showing off Winnipeg in a whole new way.

Photographer Kyle Schappert started the hashtag #PEGCITYSPINNERS. With fire, he spins steel wool into ultra-cool photographs.

"We're combining pyro techniques with photography and a whole lot of unplanned craziness," said Schappert.

Now, he’s hosting workshops and sharing the secret of the photographs with some new enthusiasts.

Tamara Walker saw the hot pictures online, wanted to take her own and got hooked.

"It's just the adrenaline rush. You're spinning a ball of fire and you're creating these incredible images," said Walker.

Turns out playing with fire is just one of the risks of this underground hobby.

Schappert is constantly searching for new locations in an attempt to nab the next spectacular image.

“There's areas that involve trespassing so you don't want you know make something that's illegal, popular,” he said.

For the past eight months the photos have been lighting up social media with a hashtag, #PEGCITYSPINNERS.

Schappert said he started the hashtag as a way to showing off Winnipeg landmarks.

It’s a hobby Schappert says has generated a new found excitement for Winnipeg, a city he said gets underrated too often.

He said the photos are influencing amateur photographers to learn the craft and to understand photography and get motivated, explore the city and take some good photographs.
