Firefighters were called to a fire on Alexander Avenue early Wednesday morning.

Officials say the blaze broke out in a home in the 1300 block of Alexander Avenue around 6:30 a.m.

Six individuals self-evacuated after they were alerted by smoke detectors. Homes nearby were evacuated as a precaution.

The man who lives in the home said his son-in-law first noticed the fire. He said there were three cats inside.

One of the cats made it out on its own, while fire crews were able to rescue the other two that were trapped inside.

There is no word on injuries or what caused the fire at this time, but it is believed to have started in the basement.

The family is making arrangements for a place to stay overnight.
