Goldeyes return to Winnipeg for first time in nearly two years
WINNIPEG -
For the first time in nearly two years, the Winnipeg Goldeyes returned to the city. The team's return was met with packed stands and long lineups both in and out of the stadium.
On Tuesday evening, the Winnipeg Goldeyes took to the field at Shaw Park with a full crowd of vaccinated fans for the first time since Sept. 2, 2019.
"I think it has been a long two years – I can't really put it into words how excited we are to be here," said Goldeyes' Shortstop Wes Darvill.
"I'm just so happy for the fans and for guys who haven't been able to experience Winnipeg before, to finally be here and finally be back in our home."
The first pitch was at 6:30 p.m., with the Goldeyes hosting the Sioux City Explorers in Winnipeg.
Due to the pandemic, the Goldeyes were uprooted from their home ballpark and have been playing in Jackson, Tennessee.
The team originally announced the return home on July 22, noting it had received permission to come back to Winnipeg.
"I think all the players are ecstatic," said Rick Forney, the manager for the Goldeyes. "Obviously we are excited to get that news."
Shaw Park was given the go-ahead to open its doors at 100 per cent capacity for the fully vaccinated. Masks are required for people in attendance at all inside facilities and they are strongly recommended when sitting in the seats.
