A man who received $40,000 in a residential school settlement has donated the entire amount to a Winnipeg inner-city shelter.

The Siloam Mission says in a news release that the man, believed to be more than 85 years old, had never set foot in the shelter or used its services.

Staff say he was adamant he wanted to donate the whole amount.

He said his only goal was to give his money to a place that was helping others, including his family and friends.

Siloam CEO John Mohan says he's amazed by the man's action, especially since he was `wronged so greatly.'

More than 80 per cent of those served at the mission have an aboriginal background.
