Ground was broken Tuesday on a new south Winnipeg school for students from kindergarten to Grade 8.

The $30-million South Pointe facility will offer English and French Immersion classes for 800 students, as well as an early learning and child care centre.

"This new school will serve our students and community well not only as an educational institution, but as a meeting place for neighbours to connect," said Tim Johnson, board chair of the Pembina Trails School Division.  "We're pleased to place shovels in the ground and get this project officially started."

The building will be built to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design’s Gold Standard for environmental sustainability.

Construction of the school began in April and is expected to be finished in time for the 2016-17 school year.
