The start of the school year in Winnipeg saw an increase in speeders through school zones.

New numbers from police show 8,704 photo radar tickets were issued in school zones in September, a jump of 1,866 from the year before.

The rise comes as infractions in school zones were trending down, when police believed drivers were getting accustomed to the reduced 30 kilometre per hour speed limit.

Other speeding violations are up as well. Intersection camera tickets rose by more than 1,000 year over year.
