A water leak in operating rooms has led St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg to suspend surgeries.
The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority issued a notice shortly after 3 p.m. Jan. 22.
The WRHA said water leaked into operating rooms after an air-exchange system failed and pipes carrying water froze and burst.
“All elective cases have been cancelled and all emergency cases will be diverted to other sites. This situation is expected to last for several days,” said the WRHA in a release.
Maintenance crews are working to address the leak.
The WRHA held a press conference Wednesday afternoon and said emergency surgeries will be primarily relocated to Health Sciences Centre and Grace Hospital.
It's not yet known how long it will take to fix the issue at St. Boniface Hospital. A number of elective surgeries at other city hospitals will be affected, due to emergency ones at St. Boniface needing to be relocated, said health officials.
